I was a bit skeptical about these products but had the opportunity to visit a store in Chicago and tried the samples first. The best part of the store sample is the $25 off coupon for the full size kit which makes the entire deal worthwhile. The brush is a 2 year brush and yes a few hairs do come off but that is to be expected. The entire process results in a fantastic shave. If you have a rather aggressive beard you will benefit from this greatly, I shave daily in the shower. The shave oil helps the blade move over your face easier and is key in the process. The shave cream seems expensive but when you consider that you use no more than a pea size amount on the brush and have more than enough foam for two shaves, its important to note that dipping the brush in the container is not recommended due to possible contamination of the product. I expect this shave cream to last around 8 months which is a great value for $22. Since I shave in the shower I put the shave oil is a small pump bottle and need to find a squeeze bottle for the shave cream to use in the shower. The unscented after shave is the best that I have ever used and is not greasy at all and makes your face feel great. My only complaint is that it has no sun screen in it. I continue to use olay facial cream for a general purpose facial moisturizer usually in the evening. I'm currently using a razor that I bought at Costco - American Razor M5 Magnum which is a great razor for the price...$20 for 20 cartridges. I have some issues around my nose with the 5 blade razors, so I will likely switch back to the Mach 3 when these are used up. I recommend that if you have a store near by that you have them demo the products for you and get a free sample to try out, which comes with the oil, shave cream and after shave. It will be enough for a few shaves. The gentlemen that I spoke to at the location in the Northbridge Mall (Michigan Ave in Chicago) were extremely helpful. Do yourself a favor a get these products, you will notice after a week that your face feels and looks great.

Finally, a product I can use to soften my beard and minimize the irritation. For those wondering how this works (and I admit, I was quite ignorant and paid for with with many cuts and infections) is like this:
1) Shave after a hot shower (this opens up pores making it easier). Shaving removes a thin layer of skin, so having it "prepped" by hot water reduces chances of irritations
2) Use a little shaving oil and work it well in your cheeks & neck to soften the beard. It can also straighten curly hair, which will make it easier to catch with the blade.
3) Lather up on top of oil. This kit provides an excellent quality badger hair shaving brush. It lets you work the shaving cream nicely into your beard. Let the oil & cream "sit" there for a minute or two.
4) Always shave with a hot blade.
5) Wash face with cool water - this will cause the pores to close-up, minimizing the chance of infection.
6) Use after-shave balm right afterward, work it well into your skin. It dries almost instantaneously.
Remember, this kit is really a "trial-size", just look at the ml-count of the mini-jars. It actually makes a perfect travel set. The brush is small, but tough, the hairs don't fall out of it, it works just as well as its "big brother". The sandalwood scent is nice and unobtrusive. I prefer it to lavender, which to me is more of a "feminine" smell, don't know how else to describe it.
My guess is that this kit has been created in order to promote interest in the "Art of Shaving" line of products, causing the customers to invest in "full-size" versions. That being said, this set will last you a couple of months, making it a great introduction to the craft of good shaving.

This is a good sampler set. Be aware that each item is pretty small. It will give you a good test of each. The brush is also not full size, but good for travel. A good item it you are interested in testing these out.

I think a lot of the reviewers here are writing about the starter kit. The quality of the full size set is great. The badger brush is of very good quality. I have used cheaper brushes, and they did start to shed almost immediately. This one has held up for me for the first month. The quality looks like it will continue to last.
The preshave oil is nicely scented with lavender. I sometimes skip this step when I'm in a hurry, but then wish I hadn't. Using it does make for a smoother shave. The shave cream works wonderfully well. The brush can work just a small dab into a rich lather that covers my beard area. I am not as sold on the after shave balm. It's pleasantly scented with lavender, but I skip this step most days.
I will definitely buy more of the shave cream when I run out.

I bought one of these kits for each of my teenage sons and they actually use it! It ;eaves their skin very smooth and seems to help give them a very close shave. There is absolutely no scent and it doesn't irritate their skin. Boar-bristle brush is a bit smaller than standard size but not too small to use. I'd buy it again!
